Our Beliefs:

At Bio-DTM Plastics , we believe that if all of us were to realize and accept our responsibility towards the environment and take environmentally conscious decisions today, it would pave the way for a much cleaner tomorrow.

The Genesis :

"A wrong attitude towards nature implies somewhere,
a wrong attitude towards God, and the consequence
 is an inevitable doom.”

             -T S Eliot

We are divided by different languages. We are divided by different ideologies. We are divided by our respective cultures which are often possessive and exclusive , and want to separate us from each other. Yet what we have in common far outweighs  the divisions which we ourselves have created, sometimes inadvertently and sometimes deliberately.

What we all have in common is the heritage of life: the planet earth itself, our desire to live a meaningful life , our desire to live in peace and harmony with the environment which has for so long sustained us.

However, the more sophisticated technology becomes, the more it disengages us from life. In the present age of  ‘technological consciousness’ our respect for our ecological heritage seems to have taken a backseat.

We seem to have forgotten that the heritage of life is the heritage of interdependence. The heritage of interdependence implies a creative symbiosis with the environment. This can be possible only if we develop ‘ecological consciousness’.

The three most important ecological values forming an integral part of this ‘ecological consciousness’ are : respect, reverence and responsibility.

We must realize that we are responsible for the destiny of this planet and of this whole universe. We must therefore accept our responsibility towards our environment.

This responsibility clearly spells out care, respect and nurturing of all that is there, and the realization that in this world of limited resources we cannot endlessly indulge in a lifestyle of excessive demands and consumptions-one which impinges the lifestyle of others or adversely affects the environment - no matter how distant the impact may be.

If we continue to be reckless in our behaviour  towards our environment, it is our future generations which will suffer.

Ecological thinking:

Let us be aware that our fundamental problem  is not so much of polluting factories and poisoned environments, but of polluted and irresponsible thinking. Simply put, all our factories etc. are an extension of our thinking. We have developed an uncaring attitude resulting in careless thinking. Careless thinking created polluting technologies and poisoned environments.

Since the Earth summit in Rio de Janeiro and the Montreal summit, "Companies have had to become educators more than just mere marketers of products". Across the developed world and increasingly in developing countries greater emphasis is being given to the business of waste disposal. In countries of Europe there are stringent laws and more are being enacted to ensure proper regulation. Taking full responsibility for our own waste , whether producer or user, is starting to place a heavy burden on our conscience and rightly so.

Making the right decision is no longer just convenience and cost. Making the right decision for the environment and the long term positive impact on our world that we share is a heightened priority. Technology must do more than just facilitate - it has to become a solution  to the problem, not only improving our lifestyles but preserving the planet for future generation as well.

It is with this belief that Bio-DTM Plastics started researching towards developing an effective  technology to control the menace of environmental pollution due to plastic bags .

The objective thus was to find a credible, acceptable and economical alternative given the circumstances and conditions prevalent in our country.

Every nook and corner  of our cities, our railway stations and disposal sites seem to be full of plastic waste which simply refuses to degrade. The harmful effects of these bags - whether it is the choking of the soil, drains, animal deaths, food hazards, air pollution on burning or limited recyclability are well known.

Possible Solutions: The Easy way out.

A complete ban on all plastics carry bags would be the most ideal solution and definitely an environmentalist's delight . Still other would advocate the " recycling of plastic waste" as is being done in some of the developed countries.

Blanket Ban:

We examined the feasibility of both the alternatives and found that a blanket ban on all plastics bags was not a practical solution.

'Plastics' have proved to be one of the most important inventions by man and this is amply demonstrated by their wide usage in the society. Think of five products and three are likely to have some component of plastic in them. Would it then be prudent - given the practical functionality, economies and wide usage of plastics, to put a blanket ban on them? Even if such a ban is imposed, do we have suitable alternates in place? Doesn’t paper require felling of trees? Aren’t paper or jute bags very expensive and incapable of serving as an economical alternative to the plastic bag?

Recyclability:

There are serious concerns regarding the efficacy of recycling particularly in the Indian context, for it requires an ideal mix of suitable technology along with great social control and discipline. All the litter needs to be segregated and thrown only at designated places from where it has to be collected by the authorities. Would this be possible in India? Would all the people be disciplined enough to segregate and throw their litter in a dustbin? Would the government have an effective means to collect and dispose of this garbage? Isn’t recycling also polluting? Could recycling, proper disposal and collection of garbage be made compulsory by legislation? If  'yes’ then how would it be enforced?

In our opinion, in the absence of a collective will - of the people and the government , enforcing or implementing such a legislation would be impractical.
At the same time we would like to add that the scenario of ‘social discipline’ required to make total recycling a success is also not entirely impossible to achieve .It would however certainly take a long time and till then we would have to contend with the sight of huge garbage dumps littered with plastic bags!

A Practical Solution: The middle path.

The only grudge against the use of plastic bags is that they do not degrade into the environment. It is only because of this feature i.e. their non biodegradable nature that they pose such a menace to the environment.

What if the bags were made environmentally degradable so that they completely disintegrate into the environment after sometime to become food for bacteria and fungi just like any other organic matter? Couldn't this be an acceptable 'middle path' -  a product which combines all the desirable and useful feature of a conventional plastic bag with the degradable nature of a paper or jute bag.

This is exactly the path  that we ,at Bio-DTM Plastics chose to follow and developed with the assistance of our collaborators consisting of internationally acclaimed research scientists, Bio-DTM Plastics -plastics which are environmentally degradable and much cheaper than comparable paper or jute bags.
